Educating a child in its mother
tongue has been proven to be the best way of making the child to understand
easily what is taught, improve its capacity and gain confidence which in turn
helps the child to forge ahead.
Mother tongue education is now
generally regarded as the first step that a child should take in a
multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious society. It positively
contributes to the growth and development of multi-cultural society and unity
in diversity.
The struggle throughout the
world for the recognition of and teaching in mother tongue has been long and
perilous, resulting in bloodshed and deaths. The United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Orgnaisation (UNESCO) has put its stamp of approval to
the importance of teaching and learning in mother tongue and to celebrate it
with its proclamation of 21 February of every year as the “International Mother
Language Day” in November 1999. This
date commemorates the students of the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh) who were
killed by the Pakistani police in Dhaka in their demonstration for recognition
of their Bangla language.
Notwithstanding the UNESCO’s
recognition of the importance of mother tongue education, there is still
reluctance and resistance on the part of a dominant community to accept the
importance of mother tongue education and the rights of the minorities to teach
and learn their mother tongues. The dominant community’s demand for a single
language education system as a means to unity has proven to be a false premise
in many countries.
Malaysians have been slowly but
surely pressurized by various educational policies and practices to do away
with mother tongue education in due course and adopt a single language
education system.
This persistent move to
introduce a single language education system of education by eliminating mother
tongue education needs further debate.
使用母语教育教学已经被证明是最好的方式,能够让孩子轻松地学习及理解,同时提高学生的能力以及信心,从而有助于开拓学生的思维。
母语教育现在普遍被认为是孩童踏入多元语言、 多元文化和多元宗教社会里的第一步。母语教育可以对多元文化社会的发展和异中求同带来积极作用。
争取母语教育受承认及使用母语教学的斗争一直是漫长而艰辛的,其中更引发流血和死亡事件。联合国教育、科学及文化组织(教科文组织)已认同母语教育教导和学习的重要性,并在1999年11月,宣布从2000年起,每年的2月21日定为“国际母语日”,目标是向全球宣传保护语言的重要,促进母语传播的运动。这个日期是为了纪念在1952年2月21日,因参与捍卫母语运动示威,而被警察开枪打死的孟加拉学生。
尽管联合国教科文组织已经认同母语教育的重要性,但还是有部分的主导地位的社会人士不愿接受母语教育,否定少数民族以母语教学及学习的权利。主流社会要求单一语言教育系统以团结大家,在很多国家爱都被证明是错误的做法。
我国人民一直受到各种教育政策的逐步加压,以便在适当的时机可消除母语教育,并采取单一语言教育系统。
这种不间断地通过消除母语教育,以引入单一语言的教育制度,应该受到关注及需要进行更多的辩论。
